DIY Car Maintenance: Tyre Tread & Oil Check Essentials.

  • Get a €2 coin: A €2 coin has a silver band that is about 2.2mm in thickness, making it a handy and easy-to-use tool for the test.
  • Insert the coin into the tyre tread: Place the €2 coin into the grooves of the tyre tread, making sure it is placed with the edge facing down into the groove.
  • Check the depth: If the silver band of the coin is fully visible when inserted into the tread groove, this indicates that the tread depth is too low and is likely below the legal or safe threshold. This means the tyre might not have enough grip, especially in wet or slippery conditions. However, if the gold part of the €2 coin is hidden in the tread, it indicates that the tyre tread is still above the minimum legal limit.

  • Park on a flat surface: Make sure the car is on level ground and the engine is off. For the most accurate reading, wait a few minutes after turning off the engine to allow the oil to settle.

  • Remove the dipstick: Pull the dipstick out of the tube. Be careful not to touch the end that goes into the oil.

  • Reinsert the dipstick: Insert the dipstick fully back into its tube, then pull it out again.
  • Check the oil level: Look at the markings on the dipstick. There will typically be two marks or holes: one indicating the "minimum" level and the other the "maximum" level. If the oil is between these marks, the level is fine. If it’s below the minimum mark, you need to add oil.
