Reduced Vehicle Registration Tax for EV
The Budget 2021 will see some significant incentives for electric vehicle owners and those looking to make the switch to EV. While government subsidies for new electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles will be phased out, they will be replaced with reduced VRT (vehicle registration tax) rates. This new scheme will benefit low emitting vehicles such as EV, PHEV and hybrid by charging significantly reduced levels of VRT. These levels, in some cases, have been halved to 7%.
Currently, a VRT rebate reduces the cost of change to EV by €5,000. A further SEAI government supported grant of €5,000 is available. While both rebates are due to expire at the end of 2021, it is expected the government’s announcement of reduction in VRT will compensate and keep prices relatively the same. In some cases, it is expected they will be even lower.
Changes To Vehicle Motor Tax
From January 1st 2021, Revenue will introduce the move to a revised motor tax system. This is designed to take into consideration the new CO2 figures as a result of WLTP testing. Cleaner, lower emission vehicles will have incentives to encourage new buyers to switch. Below is a breakdown of this new system.
